Washington DC Day 2
We woke up bright and early and had to stop by my uncle’s work. But it wasn’t without a stop at Dunkin’ Donuts a must-try since the west-coast doesn’t have any (currently). After that, drove over to Arlington Cemetery in Virginia. This place is huge! When you think you have gotten to the end, their is hill concealing how big it really is. I was able to catch the end of the guard changing ceremony at the tomb of the unknown. The place was very beautiful and a solemn place to pay respects to the many fallen. Then, we walked over to the Arlington House which is also the Robert E. Lee memorial. Also was able to stop by JFK’s Memorial which was very beautiful with the ever burning fire. Just note it was a bit windy and pretty darn cold. So dress warmly!
After warming up in the heat of the car was drove over to Theodore Roosevelt Island. With only one way on and off, it might be a safe retreat for the zombie apocalypse though the resources on the island are moot. The island is great for a morning jog as it provides many trails and not much else. Bring your walking shoes, as once we walked far enough into one trail it took awhile for that it to bring us back. I do not believe Bicycles are allowed on the island despite how much fun an off road bike might look to be there. In the middle of the island their is a memorial dedicated to Teddy Roosevelt. I bet in the summer that the fountains are all running, and I bet their are a ton of bugs but hey who cares haha.
We then drove over to the Washington Monument where the Kite Festival was taking place as it was Cherry Blossom season. Though they were not blooming until the following week. Again, having only seen this thing on TV I underestimated the massiveness of this structure. Below is a picture right next to it looking up, you can’t even see where it ends, quite amazing. With all the kites flying around it was a bit like dodging bullets haha. But it was a cool festival nonetheless, their were places to buy kites, make little paper kites, their was a place to repair your kite (the Kite Hospital, not even joking). All in all, a bitter cold yet awesome day. All this site seeing and kite dodging made us hungry though.
We made our way over to Nando’s Perri – Perri where I quickly consumed a half of portugese style chicken. It spicy just the way I like it and I had a side of their famous peas mash and of course fries. We did a little shopping at Macy’s and I can’t believe I am going to say it, I had (or was forced) into getting a pedicure. Now, this experience in of itself wasn’t horrible – but torturous. I am a very ticklish person and it took me all the power of mind and body to keep from kicking the poor lady cleaning my feet in the face. I should say it was nice, but not something I would dare try again. Were my feet nice and soft after, yes. But I it really required much focus to not totally flip out. By the end of it, I felt like I was five years old again and I had just calmed down from a tantrum. However all of that focus wasn’t without reward – and by that I mean frozen custard. Now, I will say this right now, if you have not ever tried frozen custard you have officially not lived. Its not ice cream, and its not FroYo, its a sweet smooth delectable masterpiece made by the Gods, or perhaps Fairys. The place was called The Dairy Godmother haha and apparently President Obama had been their as they painted the seat with a seal stated he had. I definitely enjoyed sitting in that seat if I do say so myself.
After that, we made it back home, took a nap, realized we were too tired to go out and get food so we ordered in Chinese Food and it was good to go!
